Keep Going

KEEP GOING

In a fighting situation, or in the competition ring, the aim is to win the fight in the fastest possible time but this is not always possible. In a fighting situation a lot of energy and mental focus will be needed even over a short period of only a few seconds therefore if the fight continues for maybe several minutes then this will become exhausting to say the least. The need for high levels of stamina and the mental discipline to stick with it throughout will be vital.

Training in this area of the martial arts will often involve workout routines that gets the heart pumping and the lungs pounding. There is nothing worse than being out of breath when trying to fight for your life or every part of your body feels like jelly and you feel like giving up and letting your opponent win the competition, or worse, if it's a fight to the death in the street.

One exercise routine that combines both stamina and muscle strength training is the run and kick routine which is ideal if you find yourself faced with an opponent that has an axe in one hand and a knife in the other. Faced with such overwhelming odds the second rule of self-defence is to run for your very life and hopefully survive to tell the tale some other day.

If you have the stamina to keep running then hopefully your attacker will run out of steam first and give up the chase but imagine if they do not and with nowhere else to run you then have the problem of defending yourself. Based on that situation the run and kick routine involves first running for a few minutes and then performing very fast and powerful repetition kicks and punches.

Repeating this routine several times will give you the stamina, strength and ability to run and then fight if need be against someone intent on knocking your head off. Hopefully your attacker will not have the same level of stamina and strength that you have and may just give up and walk away.

The first rule of self-defence of course is avoidance. Simply avoiding getting yourself in that type of situation in the first place will always be the best form of self-defence.
